What will I learn?
As an overview, you will learn the basics of our Modern Marquetry techniques, allowing you to create your own piece of Modern Marquetry artwork to take home and show off to friends and family.
You will be taught about the different materials used and how they perform for each task. You will be led by our team in how to use the necessary tools and you will be provided with all the personal protective equipment needed.
Sustainability & Circularity
Our main objective for these courses is to educate our community about sustainability and circularity in our field of work. During these courses we will demonstrate how we, as a business, are actively diverting ‘waste stream materials’ and ‘offcuts’ from landfill or other ways of disposal. You will be taught how these materials still have a huge amount of value and can be given a second life. Re-use & Repurpose!

Although we have toilet facilities, regretfully, they are not appropriate for wheelchair users. Moving forward, this is something that we aim to address, especially since we want what we do and stand for to be available to anyone interested.

We are based in the Cornish wilds and tend to keep the doors open in order to keep the air as clean as possible, so dress up in warm clothes that you don't mind getting a little dusty.
Personal Protective Equipment is provided but feel free to bring your own if you wish to use it.
Bring your own packed lunch, but help yourself to the tea, coffee and biscuits which will be provided.

Our group courses are open to anyone and spaces are sold individually. Therefore if you book onto a group course as an individual, you will share the experience with other Modern Marquetry enthusiasts.

Our group courses have a maximum of 3 participants. You will each have your own bench to work from and plenty of contact time with our team.

Your new skills & understanding of materials will allow you to start creating your own Modern Marquetry pieces. You can also book onto a longer course or book in for a 1 to 1 session, allowing you to fine tune these skills or develop an area of Modern Marquetry that interests you.

As part of each booking we receive, we plant 1 tree here in Cornish soil through our sustainability partnership with Plant 1 Cornwall.
One Day Course
In this one-day course, you’ll dive into the fundamentals of Modern Marquetry, starting with marking and measuring techniques that ensure precision. Guided by our expert instructors, you’ll learn to cut and shape materials using band saws and sanders, all under close supervision. Beginning with shapes cut from our stock of reclaimed materials, you’ll systematically bond these to a plywood base, creating a unique surface in an organic, freeform style.
After arranging and bonding your design, the surface will be leveled using the FB10 band saw and refined with a drum sander, ensuring a smooth and cohesive finish. Next, you’ll shape the final outline of your piece using a smaller band saw and perfect the surface with an orbital sander. A finish will then be applied, enhancing the colors and textures to bring your pattern to life.
Finally, if you wish to display your artwork on a wall, we’ll create a bespoke hanging bracket from reclaimed materials, complete with fixings and instructions. By the end of the day, you’ll have a striking, custom piece of Modern Marquetry to proudly showcase in your home or studio!
Two Day Course
Our two-day Modern Marquetry course takes your skills to the next level, guiding you through the entire process of crafting a unique Modern Marquetry artwork. You'll start by building your own Modern Marquetry block, which becomes the foundation for your final masterpiece.
Throughout the course, you’ll master a variety of tools, including handheld routers, planer/thicknessers, impact drivers, sanders, and clamps for complex glue-ups. Day two introduces advanced techniques with our FB10 band saw, enabling precise slicing of your Marquetry block. From shaping and bonding slices to creating an organic design on a plywood base, you’ll see your vision come to life.
After refining your surface with a drum sander to ensure a smooth finish, you'll shape and perfect the edges using our linisher and optional trim router. A final sanding and an oil finish will enhance the grain and colors, making your work truly shine.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a custom piece ready to display, with the option to add a wall bracket for effortless showcasing. Celebrate your creativity with a masterpiece that's uniquely yours!
